Unstable Grid Power and High Electricity Costs in Malasia

2026-10-27

Project Location:

Melaka, Malaysia

Project Introduction:

Oil palms are sensitive to drought, but they face an even greater challenge: the lack of power when irrigation is needed and high electricity costs when power is available. This plantation in Melaka covers 100 acres of oil palms. It previously relied on grid power for water pumping, but the local grid was unreliable and peak-hour electricity rates were high; over the long term, this created risks for crop yields and became a financial drain.

Solution:

Solartech (Shenzhen) partnered with a local firm to install an 18.5kW solar water pump and sprinkler irrigation system for the plantation. The system was designed with a total dynamic head of 68 meters—a figure that accounts not only for vertical lift but also for pipeline friction losses and the operating pressure required for the sprinkler heads. The system operates on a "Solar Priority, AC/DC Hybrid Input" model: during the day, solar power directly drives the pump, delivering water to the sprinkler network at a rate of 55 m³/h. When solar output fluctuates due to cloud cover or time-of-day variations, the PB22KH-G3 solar pumping inverter automatically draws grid power to supplement the supply, ensuring the pump maintains full-frequency operation and guaranteeing stable water output even at the furthest sprinkler heads.

Social Benefits:

✅ By prioritizing PV and using the grid to fill the gap, you save on electricity costs while solving the problem of grid instability
💰 A one-time investment eliminates years of worry over fuel and electricity costs. Calculations for a 100-acre oil palm plantation show that replacing a grid-only pumping system with this 18.5 kW PV sprinkler setup allows for investment recovery in approximately 3–4 years.
🌴 Oil palms enter a stable production phase after three years; ensuring adequate water and fertilizer during the early stages leads to more consistent yields later on.

Q&A:

❓ Q1: Can solar power really handle 100 acres of oil palms, a 68-meter head, and a sprinkler system?
✅ A: Yes, it can. System Configuration:
Water Pump Power: 18.5 kW (3-phase AC; matched to sprinkler irrigation pressure requirements)
PV Pump Inverter: PB22KH-G3 (fully automatic operation)
PV Power: total 34.7kWp
Total Head: 68 m (system design head, accounting for pipeline losses and sprinkler operating pressure)
Flow Rate: 55 m³/h (matched to the sprinkler irrigation system)
System Overview: We don't just calculate "how high the water can be lifted"; we calculate whether the sprinklers in the last row of the irrigation network can spray properly. The 68-meter figure represents the actual operating point after factoring in terrain elevation differences, pipeline friction, and sprinkler operating pressure. This design ensures water reaches every sprinkler, avoiding systems that look good on paper but fail to deliver water in practice.

❓ Q2: When grid power is unstable; what happens on cloudy days, during early morning/evening hours, or in the dry season?
✅ A: A "Solar Priority, AC/DC Hybrid Input" strategy ensures the pump frequency remains stable despite fluctuations in solar power. The PB22KH-G3 inverter’s Solar Priority, AC/DC Hybrid Input function solves this:
1) When solar power is abundant, the system runs entirely on PV, and the pump operates at full frequency;
2) During solar fluctuations or insufficient sunlight (cloudy days), the inverter draws from the grid to bridge the power gap, maintaining the pump's frequency;
3) A water storage tank allows for daytime storage and nighttime/continuous cloudy-day release; in cases of extremely low light or urgent nighttime needs, the system can switch to direct grid or generator power.
